Speakers:

Todd Grischke, Assistant Chief, Fisheries Division, Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Todd plans to come and inform us about a very big & close to home topic of late. “PFAS”, where it has been detected & the effects on our fish species. Todd will also give us an overview of the GL Consent Decree and upcoming negotiations with the tribes, and the Commercial Fishing Statute. Todd will also provide an update on MDNR fisheries division winter activities, Great Lakes Salmon and Trout Status, and the Arctic Grayling Initiative. Come to the meeting and hear it first hand from our Assistant Fisheries Chief.

Steve Woods, Oak Openings Project Manager, The Nature Conservancy

Steve will discuss the current conservation situation in SE MI and the relationship between quantity and condition of wildlife habitat and the quality of experience for hunters.   Basically stating that there are two issues that affect wildlife populations, the quantity of habitat available and the condition of that habitat.  The Quantity is harder to change and much more expensive than the quality but SE MI has less public land than it needs and we are trying to build coalitions to change that.  The habitat quality is seriously degraded by invasive species and fire suppression and we have been aggressively working to improve the condition. However, private  lands have a large role to play since 95% of the land is in private hands, etc.  I’ll finish by identifying opportunities where people’s time, money and effort can have the biggest impact.
